Hangover

Hangover

Japan is a country with a high consumption of alcoholic beverages socially. It is a way of approximation, in a country with excessively shy and reserved people. In these encounters, intimacy is exposed and sometimes even physical contact, which is something rare.

During my masters course in the country, I adhered to this to insert myself in the culture. Many of the encounter were full of sake, beer, wine and vodka. I started to collect the bottles I consumed. The result, was an installation of more than 70 glass bottles from varied beverages and moulded by heat, hung in a 50 meter clothesline, by hangers. This work won the first prize in the Grand Prix Joshibi Exhibition.

re-Cycle

re-Cycle

re-Cycle was the graduation project for my masters course in Japan. In this work, I was able to apply all the learnt techniques using my research's material, glass. Processes like glassblowing, casting, fusing, mirror and locksmith.

re-Cycle symbolises life cycle, adapted to the technologies of present time. Since birth, in captivity, to growing and the construction of cities through reused waste.

Discourses about impermanence, fragility and the personal processes .Glass, a dichotomic material , at the same time accommodates us inside and lets us go through. Our eyes dances in its materiality. It's liquidity solidifies.

3 Monkeys

3 Monkeys

3 monkeys is a philosophy from the japanese culture where the vision, hearing and speaking are glorified when not used.

Here, the objects are associated to the bottles that float through floaters. Mirrored, they reflect the viewer's image, who goes in the work, and becomes the work too.

Blown and mirrored glass, moulded glass and photography on glass. Japan, 2007.

Habitações

Habitação

"Housing" is an unanimous human right. To own your own space on earth gives it a sense of belonging, security and liberty.

Due to the growing world population and massive migration to the big cities, housing has become a luxury good.

Buyers go on crescent debts through loans and mortgages, with growing values.

To own a territory has become a burden. In "Housing", 21 glass blown pieces were installed from the roof. They seem to be floating, giving it the sensation of liberty and lightness. Nevertheless, the houses are chained, unable to move.

The glass was blown from inside its metal construction beam. It is over inflated, deformed, looking like it is going to explode at any moment. The Transparency transports the viewer inside the houses. He feels imprisoned.

The bubble is about to explode.

So small

So fragile

So beatiful

Why does it weight so much?

Because I carry

The gravity of the world

About beauty, fragility and smallness

Only illusion

“Caliandra” no Ciclo da Semana Japonesa 2017

“Caliandra”
